“Type your user name and password to connect for retrieving response groups” error in Lync 2010

Just a quick post on an error I received a while ago. When your Forefront environment isn’t configured correctly for publishing the Lync 2010 websites, you can receive the following error:

Credentials are required. Type your user name and password to connect for retrieving response groups

However, after you fill in your credentials they aren’t accepted. This problem occurs when your Lync web services publishing rule isn’t configured correctly. Solve this problem as follows:

  1. Navigate to your Forefront TMG Lync Publishing Rule and select properties
  2. Navigate to the Authentication Delegation Tab
  3. Select “No Authentication, but client may authenticate directly”.
  4. Click OK and apply the configuration.

In case you don’t make the above mentioned change, the Lync website is not able to pass the authentication information back from the Lync server to the client, as Forefront responds on behalf of the user and the Lync client will present you the same dialog box again.
